Salary: £38,000 per annum + benefits including up to 6% matched pension contribution

DMWS is an international charity that has been providing welfare support to the Armed Forces Community for over 70 years. Due to recent reshaping of the organisation we are now looking to recruit an Area Manager.  We are seeking a talented manager ideally from a public sector or voluntary background who can demonstrate empathy for the Armed Forces and have a proven track record in operational delivery.

The main focus of the role is to ensure the successful delivery of DMWS’s service to contractual partners and to provide effective leadership to their Departments. The post-holder will also have an external focus as an ambassador of DMWS, building excellent working relationships with partners and looking for opportunities for expansion. They will also income generate through effective business networking. This is a mobile and deployable role. Working for the Head of Operations you will be managing and developing services whilst providing leadership and direction to your teams. Welfare and Navigator Lead (Primary Care)


12 Month Fixed Term Contract
Salary: £28,000
Hours: 35 per week

Location: Birmingham

Would you like the opportunity to work for an outstanding new project establishing a welfare navigation service within a primary care environment and then providing on-going support to referred members of the wider military community, including serving personnel, veterans, reservists and their families?

If the answer to this question is ‘YES’ then you may wish to consider taking up the challenging but rewarding role of Service Navigator in an independent charitable organisation that cares, supports and rewards. The Defence Medical Welfare Service has nearly 75 years of experience in supporting those who serve, and that experience is now being extended to other arenas such as GP practices. You will provide welfare support primarily to the wide military community and have the ability to be mobile in order to meet operational needs and may occasionally be called upon to support other DMWS service-users.

Key responsibilities will include, establishing a process for gaining referrals from each GP practice, making all relevant connections with key stakeholders, running training and awareness programmes for GP staff and accurate record keeping providing data and reports within agreed timescales.

All DMWS field staff are required to complete a Diploma in Welfare Studies and Mental Health First Aid Course as part of their training. The induction package also includes mentoring by an experienced Welfare Officer or Manager. We are seeking confident self-starters who are compassionate with great inter-personal skills and whom can demonstrate a natural empathy for the Armed Forces.

Working as part of a team you will be supporting the military veteran’s community when they are in hospital (inpatient and outpatient), or receiving treatment in community based health facilities.  The role involves, on a rota basis, out of hours and weekend emergency cover. All DMWS Welfare Officers are expected to be mobile and deployable.

You will provide welfare support primarily to police officers, staff and their families but may occasionally be called upon to support other DMWS service-users. Working as part of a small team, you will be supporting members of the police community when they are on a medical care pathway. You will provide emotional and practical medical welfare support, within a hospital environment (inpatient and outpatient), during treatment in community-based health facilities, or via home visits.

Key responsibilities will include working in partnership with officers and staff associations, police charities, the NHS and other organizations to enable Constabularies to enhance the health and resilience of the workforce, meet duty-of-care obligations, and promote better outcomes.
