Dr Gordon Paterson OBE
Chairman

Dr Paterson is a specialist in Public Health with over 35 years experience in the NHS. He currently has various remits as advisor on cancer and screening programmes to the four UK Health Departments, and is NGO representative on MoD's Depleted Uranium Oversight Board.

Gordon has been involved with the Red Cross for 30 years and for 3 of those was appointed as Chief Medical Advisor to British Red Cross. He has had extensive involvement in contingency planning at national level, including joint work with military colleagues on transition to Reception Arrangement Military Patients (RAMP) in the run up to Op TELIC operations in the Gulf.

He is currently a member of Joint Committee of the Order of St John and the British Red Cross.

Mini-biographies of Directors

1 Baroness Emerton DBE DL
Baroness Audrey Emerton is a distinguished member of the nursing profession with numerous prestigious remits at national level including chairing UKCC.

She has had a long association with Order of St John, initially joining as a cadet in 1946 and progressing continually, holding the post of Chancellor/Chief Commander of St John Ambulance for several years until her retirement in 2002.

Audrey is a former member of the Joint Committee of the Order of St John and the British Red Cross.

Since becoming a life peer in 1997 she has contributed regularly as a cross bench member in the House of Lords on a variety of issues relating to the nursing profession, health care and the voluntary sector.

2 Phyllida Stewart-Roberts OBE JP
Mrs. Stewart-Roberts is a long serving member and past Chairman of the Joint Committee of the Order of St John and the British Red Cross. She took particular interest in its Service Hospital Welfare Department (the forerunner of DMWS) and was heavily involved with the evolution of DMWS.

As Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, Mrs. Stewart-Roberts is actively involved with many charitable organizations including acting as a trustee for the well renowned Florence Nightingale Foundation.

Phyllida has an extensive and ongoing involvement with the Order of St John and is President of St John Council for Sussex, and President for the County of East Sussex South East Reserve Forces and Cadets' Association.

3 David Causer
A fully qualified Chartered Accountant Mr David Causer is a Fellow of Institute of Chartered Accountants and a Member of The Securities Institute.
He has held a number of senior positions within financial organizations including Finance Director of Mercury Asset Management Group. Whilst in this role he was part of the team that successfully negotiated the Company sale to Merrill Lynch and oversaw the subsequent integration.
David is currently Director of Finances & Resources for The British Red Cross Society.

4 Kathleen George CBE RRC
Mrs. Kathleen George is an experienced nurse executive with extensive experience at senior level in both the Military and NHS. As the Director of Standards and Registrations of the Nursing and Midwifery Council, Kathy has developed good working relationships with many health care organizations including the Department of Health and Royal College of Nursing.

During a distinguished military career Kathy attained the rank of Colonel. She was the Director of Army Services between 2002 and 2005 and Matron in Chief of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC).

Kathy has first hand knowledge of Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Selly Oak Hospital (RCDM) –  as Assistant Director Nursing Services from 2000 to 2002. She was awarded the Royal Red Cross 1st Class, nick named the VC of nursing, for her exceptional services in military nursing during 1990-1991 when she was Matron to the regular field hospital deployed during the first Gulf War.

 In 2006 Kathy was awarded the CBE for her contribution to military nursing spanning a period of 26 years.
