Yesterday (23.11.2016), Nicky Murdoch, CEO of the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) and Deputy Chairman Steve Cowden visited Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex at her home in Bagshot Park. The meeting was held 6 months after HRH visited DMWS’s headquarters for the first time to meet members of staff, service users and Trustees to hear about the charity’s work and the impact it has had on the lives of those it has helped over the last 73 years. In June 2016, a month after her initial visit, The Countess of Wessex, formalised her support for and the interest in the welfare of the Armed Forces Community and became the charity’s first Royal Patron.

Yesterday’s meeting presented DMWS with the opportunity to update The Countess of the excellent progress the charity has made over the last 6 months. DMWS’s expertise is rooted in operational experience and enables the charity to offer their service to other frontline workers who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the public. The benefits of extending their welfare support to other areas have been recognised and DMWS launched exciting new initiatives for Aged Veterans and a welfare project with the Police Force.

In addition, DMWS talked about the development of their training branch, which offers a range of courses in Welfare, Mental Health First Aid and Resilience for external organisations.

Nicky Murdoch summed up the meeting and tweeted : “Excellent visit to see DMWS Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex. Very interested, supportive and knowledgable. Thank you Ma’am.”
